The United States women’snational soccer team has earned a parade. The players also earned a payday atleast equal to their male counterparts.

It is difficult tounderstand the argument that the United States women’s national soccer team shouldget paid just as much as the men’s national soccer team.

It is anembarrassment that United States Soccer has failed to address thisinjustice, allowing the joy of Sunday’s celebrations to be tainted by thereality of unfair treatment.

Pay comparisonsare complicated because the men’s and women’s teams have separately negotiatedcontracts. Members of the women’s team are paid by the federation to play inthe National Women’s Soccer League, on top of which they receive payments forplaying for the national team. The men just get national team payments.

Under the currentcontract for the women’s team, which took effect in April 2017, the women and the men wouldearn the same amount if both national teams played 20 games — and lost all 20games. With each victory, however, the men’s team would enjoy alarger advantage.

The women can earn more in a given year, as they are likely todo this year. But that is only because they achieved so much. For comparablesuccess, the women get less.

Much of the debate about the paygap has focused on revenue. Officials have argued that the men’s team shouldsimply be regarded as a more successful business.

Even by this measure, there is a case that the women are beingwronged. It is not clear, for example, how United States Soccer treatssponsorships that cover both teams.

But revenue is thewrong measuring stick.
United StatesSoccer is a nonprofit, exempted from taxation because it serves a socialpurpose: “To make soccer, in all its forms, a pre-eminent sport in the UnitedStates.”
It should beobvious to the people who run the federation that the women’s team isfulfilling that mission at least as well as the men’s team.

The women’s soccerteam, like other national teams, also represents the United States. The womenwho wear the nation’s colors are ambassadors on an international stage. Theirperformances inform perceptions of the United States. Millions of people aroundthe world watched on Sunday as a team of strong and skillful women played agame with determination and sportsmanship, and then celebrated freely.

Pay gaps are apersistent problem in American society. The case of the national soccer teamsis merely an unusually clear and public example of the issue.

United States Soccer and its 28 female players suing for genderdiscrimination have agreed to enter mediation in the hopes of resolving theplayers’ lawsuit. The federation now has the opportunity to create its own clearand public example — by finally doing the right thing.
